What is Global Warming?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Global Warming as: “an increase in the earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from pollution”.

There are several causes for the increased temperatures on our planet.

Solar activity is the main cause of rising temperatures on our planet. As the sun flares up, so do the temperature on our planet.

Many scientists agree that the rising levels of certain gasses in the atmosphere are anthropogenic, or caused primarily by humans, and reflect the heat that otherwise would dissipate into space, thus warming our planet even more. These gasses produce what is called greenhouse gas effect, and scientist agree that some of the more powerful ones are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and fluorocarbons.

Trees help reduce temperature wherever they are planted. The fast paced deforestation reduces the ability of trees to lower the temperature around where they are planted.

Common sense dictates that there is little that we can do in order to influence the effects of the sun on our planet.

We cannot really do anything to curtail the effects of water vapors.

The main culprit for the increase of CO2, amazingly enough, is humans and animals. Fortunately for us, plants and trees use carbon dioxide and expelled Oxygen. We need Oxygen in order to survive.

We really do not want to reduce the layer of ozone in our atmosphere, since it would allow the passing of even more ultra violet rays thus increasing the incidence of skin cancer. Fluorocarbons thins the layer of ozone in the atmosphere. Most of us have no control, access to, or use of nitrous oxide. This gas is used as anesthetic in dentistry and surgery, as laughing gas, and as an oxidizer in race cars. Methane is the principal component of Natural Gas, when it burns along with Oxygen, produces Carbon Dioxide.

So, in order to influence our environment and reduce the greenhouse gas effect, the logical avenue is to plant more trees, and reduce the use of fluorocarbons.

Help us preserve the environment now!
