On the Road:
1. Buy smart. This is easy. Check your car’s fuel usage. Just because it says Hybrid, it does not mean that you are being a good steward of the environment. Some regular cars are more fuel-efficient than fifty percent of the hybrids on the market today. The new Chevy Malibu is estimated that gives thirty miles per gallon in the highway. Make sure to take in consideration whether you drive more in the city or on the highway. When you read the car specifications, it will give you two numbers for fuel efficiency, the lower number indicates the fuel used while driving in the city. I have found it useful to average both numbers, and that is what I would expect to use in fuel.
2. Drive smart. When you allow yourself to become a victim of road rage, and accelerate to give the jerk that cut you off a piece of your mind, you are just wasting money and using more hydrocarbon fuels that contaminate the environment even more. Be slow to accelerate, and keep a prudent distance from the car in front of you. It is common sense. Do not drive faster than 65 miles per gallon. Remove roof racks. A roof rack will reduce your vehicle fuel efficiency by about five percent. Empty the trunk. Excess stuff in your car will make it heavier, thus, less fuel-efficient.
3. Tune your car. Clean your fuel injectors, replace your air intake filter, and give your car a tune up.
4. Check your tires. Ensure that your tires are rotated as indicated by the manufacturer, and that they are properly inflated.
5. Give your car a break, use mass transportation, or bike more, or walk to work; it will not only help the environment, but will save you money, and make you healthier.
